My practice centres the body to communicate the layered norms, nuances, and unsettling feelings embedded in society. Through performance, sculpture and installations, I capture everyday social gestures and phenomena, transforming them into uncanny experiences. I work with everyday objects and believe in the presence and autonomy of materials. By emphasising beings that normally do not have voices, part of my work is to scoop the inner qualities of the oppressed, the passive, and the unheard. My work is incomplete without the presence of bodies, either directly or indirectly. I often invite the audience to reflect on the societal structures around them, or just be present to experience. Their actions can also shape the visual and structural elements of the work. One year ago, I went to a protest; two years ago, to another one; three years ago, my attention was somewhere else. Seeing the images in the news, I get disappointed, I get angry, and then I forget. Will I be furious with something else in one year? Disappointed again? My head has a fever, and my emotions cannot keep up. Then I look up, and I see the clouds, feeling how small I am. Perhaps whatever is happening right now is what it is. Clouds appear, move and disappear, as we do.&nbsp;The work consists of two layers of calligraphy paper collage placed one on top of the other, as if they camouflage each other’s existence. Through a series of participatory exercises, the audience experiences which sounds stand out in noise, how we select and prioritise information when listening, and how we use physical means to block or reduce sound. The lecture also examines the psychological filters that shape our listening, what we pay attention to, what we ignore, and why. It contemplates the ongoing tragedies that unfold, one after another, with this multimedia performance serving as a poignant memorial to events and lost lives. With vinyls as analogue textures, electronic synths, radio signals, animal calls, and our voices create a layered chorus. These elements are looped, mixed, and distorted using sound software and a manual loop machine, resulting in a deeply textured auditory experience. This project is in development through multiple residencies and presentations. Driven by high pressure, stress, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future, Yamamoto undergoes insomnia as well as its unpleasant effects. In this live performance, the Performer’s heartbeats (live recorded) are amplified in the Crypt space, sometimes distorted throughout the performance. The project on sleep began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Yamamoto’s sleeping patterns deteriorated. Those chaotic insomniac nights transform into the video performance ‘My Strange Wish to be Worm’(2020), delving into the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep known as Hypnagogia. In this live performance “Welcome to My Restless Night” as a new iteration of “My Strange Wish to be Worm” the artist will be affected by physical and sensory interruptions caused by her own heartbeats amplified throughout the space. The work draws material from YouTube, live mixing images and sounds sourced from live-streamed war zones, archival news media, and the voices of individuals online. Using these fragments, Yamamoto live-composes an evolving soundscape, creating a raw and immediate reflection on the overwhelming flow of mediated grief in the current society connected through the internet.
