Yui Yamamoto is a Japanese artist. My practice centres the body to communicate the layered norms, nuances, and unsettling feelings embedded in society. Through performance, sculpture and installations, I capture everyday social gestures and phenomena, transforming them into uncanny experiences. I work with everyday objects and believe in the presence and autonomy of materials. By emphasising beings that normally do not have voices, part of my work is to scoop the inner qualities of the oppressed, the passive, and the unheard.
My work is incomplete without the presence of bodies, either directly or indirectly. I often invite the audience to reflect on the societal structures around them, or just be present to experience. Their actions can also shape the visual and structural elements of the work. This is my meaning of "sculptural practice": a practice that extends beyond form - space, time, sound, atmosphere, and audience perception.
